Spent coffee grounds are a type of waste generated from coffee processing. These coffee grounds are highly acidic, and can cause soil contamination if they are thrown away.
Instead of being an environmental hazard, coffee grounds can be repurposed as a source of renewable energy. That's why at our instant coffee processing facility in Vietnam, we switched to using coffee grounds and other renewables for 33% of our energy needs.
It takes about 71 megajoules of energy to produce 1 kilogram of instant coffee. Roasting and grinding coffee beans, drying and packaging coffee extract, and lighting and cooling a processing facility – it all adds up.
Our coffee processing factory in Vietnam has taken cumulative steps to reduce its energy consumption, such as installing power-saving sensors and switching to LED lightbulbs. In 2019, it saved enough energy to power 142 million 100-watt lightbulbs for an hour.
